Spine, Flex, and Weight: How the Three Actually Work Together
Spine orientation doesn't replace flex or weight in a fitting — it decides which direction those properties actually point once the shaft is glued in.
Spine
Spine is the plane around a shaft's circumference where it resists bending the most, caused by small manufacturing variances that exist in nearly every shaft, steel or graphite. Orienting it on purpose — usually facing it toward or away from the target line depending on shaft type — is what a spine-aligned build means. Left unchecked, it lands in a random rotation every time.
FLO (Flat Line Oscillation)
FLO testing spins a clamped shaft under a fixed weight and watches which way the tip settles as it oscillates. It's a second, independent way of confirming a spine reading found on the deflection board — the two methods should agree before we lock in an orientation for your build.
Flex
Flex describes how much a shaft bends under load along its length. It's tempo-dependent as much as speed-dependent — two golfers with the same clubhead speed can need different flexes if their transition differs. Flex and spine are independent properties; a shaft can be the correct flex and still be installed with the spine facing an unhelpful direction.
Weight & Kick Point
Shaft weight affects swing tempo and can help a golfer shallow out or add speed to their delivery. Kick point — where a shaft bends most through the swing — shifts launch higher or lower for the same static loft. Both get dialed in during the live bay portion of a session, after spine orientation is already settled.
Does Material Change the Spine Test?
No — both steel and graphite shafts have a spine, and both benefit from the same deflection board and FLO process. Steel shafts tend to show a more pronounced spine reading since the manufacturing tolerances are tighter relative to the material's stiffness; graphite spines can be subtler but are still measurable and still worth orienting correctly, especially in longer clubs like drivers and fairway woods where small misalignments show up as bigger dispersion at distance.
Two Identical Shafts, Two Different Builds
Take two shafts of the same model, flex, and weight straight from the same box. Build one with the spine oriented on purpose and the other with it glued in wherever it happened to land, and the two clubs will not perform identically even though every number on the spec sheet matches. That gap is exactly what the deflection board and FLO test are built to close.
